COMPLETE THE TRAINING

Onboarding at ScholarMatch is a straightforward process designed to ensure our career coaches are well-prepared to make a positive impact. It involves two essential steps: passing a criminal background check and completing a series of online trainings.

We provide robust training for volunteers through several online training modules, which we estimate take 2-3 hours to complete. We will introduce you to ScholarMatch, the student population, advising strategies and resources. You may work at your own pace, but we recommend completing the modules within two weeks.

3

JOIN our Career Community

Fuel the social capital of our students and join our Career Community by adding your profile to our database. Volunteers will support multiple students with one-off questions about their career path through informational interviews or provide industry-specific advice on resumes, interview prep, etc.

This program is flexible – career coaches can opt-in or-out at anytime after completing their training, and career coaches and students decide their focus area/goals for each interaction! This is a great opportunity for busy professionals who have a wealth of industry knowledge and want to make an impact on first-generation college students’ career journeys.

And/OR

Match with a student!

The “Career Launch” program is designed to bring career coaches who wish to deepen their relationship with first-generation college students and  them valuable career skills during a 7-month term. Once volunteers complete their training, they will be matched with a student to begin providing individualized career support.

Career coaches and students will virtually connect twice a month for an hour, working through a curriculum that is designed to prepare them for career planning and management. This is a great opportunity for industry professionals to practice their coaching and leadership skills, while inspiring first-generation college students to pursue their dreams.

4

GIVE SUPPORT, GET SUPPORT

As a career coach, you'll have the opportunity to engage in continuous learning through monthly professional development webinars and training sessions. Additionally, you'll gain access to our extensive network of professionals spanning various industries, allowing you to connect with fellow volunteers, share experiences, and broaden your impact.

What Coaches ARE sayING

"My time as a career coach with ScholarMatch has been exceptionally gratifying. I collaborated with a UC Berkeley sophomore who shares my career interests. We both gleaned invaluable insights by sharing my professional journey, offering LinkedIn insights, researching graduate programs, and conducting mock interviews. I am immensely thankful for this enriching experience, fostering mutual growth. I highly recommend the ScholarMatch Career Services program for its impactful volunteer work."

"Being a career coach and encouraging students who struggle financially or are first generation  has been such a transformative experience for me. I absolutely love giving students advice and tips on how to succeed. I had so many opportunities at my finger tips and really benefited from going to college so am grateful to give back to hardworking students hopefully being a great example of how having concrete career goals will change their lives."

- Ali McPherson

"Over the last 3 years, I have gotten the opportunity to help 3 young women prepare to enter into the workforce. Watching them go through career exploration and resume building and end up in their own exciting summer internships has been so rewarding. The Scholars come with such interesting insight and passion to take their experience into the "real world" and it has been such a pleasure to see each of them evolve!"

- Jenna Bordy

"My first year as a career coach with ScholarMatch showed me I chose the right organization to work with. I was so impressed with process, materials, and resources that ScholarMatch provides to support its coaches and students. Their thoughtful step-by-step process for the school year provided a strong foundation for working with my student, and the resources they connect you to are truly informative and useful for both student and coach. I had a wonderful experience working with my student who met with me at least once a month, prepared well for our meetings, and showed lots of enthusiasm for the process. My student recently reached out to me to tell me about how well his internship is going! I'm looking forward to staying in touch with him and to working with new students in the coming school year."

- Liz Chow

"I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a career coach over the last year.  It was delightful getting to know my student and witness how motivated and focused she was on her education and her professional development.  She responded so positively to each and every suggestion I offered.  Supporting my student as a first generation college student allowed me to act on my deeply help values about social and racial justice."

- Ralph Silber

"As a career coach, I help first generation students seek out their highest potential academically and professionally. It's a honor to watch my students grow into the person that they want to become and to be a support system for all of their career endeavors. Walking them through the path of getting their dream internship to landing their first full-time position is one of the most heart warming feeling of all time. It's the timeline from start to finish that makes me extremely grateful to be a career coach at ScholarMatch. I love connecting with students and I thank ScholarMatch for giving me an opportunity to do so! "
